Magical metamorphosis happens when creatives come together to make cast iron works from recycled past objects and present-day inspirations. The alchemic transformation of solid to liquid to solid – obsolete radiators to molten glowing heat to sculptural and performance artworks, which provoke and delight.
Welcome to the first exhibition of the Canadian Society of Contemporary Iron Arts (CSCIA), born from long-time musing and materializing during the lull created by pandemic restrictions in 2020.
This exhibition is a showcase of works by members of the CSCIA, sampling diverse applications in the medium and material of iron-casting. The broken up fins of a discarded hot water radiator become a skeletal array of rapid-test cartridges, or a contemplative witness to the dreams and difficulties of transplanted students.
CSCIA is headquartered in Hamilton – an area long associated to metal works, and now a creative hub. We seek to promote experimentation in the contemporary transformative arts process, with a variety of mouldmaking and metal casting events for members and the general public.
